In the wake of the post yesterday on David Jones, I thought it appropriate to republish this poem. Because my father fought in the first world war, even though he never spoke of his experience its shadow hung over my childhood, mostly through my mother’s anxious ruminations about its impact on her life. The book I remember discovering as a child was a collection of black and white photographs of the ‘Great War.’

I have embarked on sequences of new posts which examine a number of ideas from books I have recently read. These ideas relate to where our society is heading and what we as individuals might be able to do about that. I decided that I also needed to republish other posts from the past that related in some way to that basic theme. This includes poems such as the one below.

Because this week was marked by ceremonies of remembrance in the centenary year of the start of what is known as the First World War, because my father fought in that war so that, even though I was not born till nearly the end of the Second World War, that first war’s shadow hung over my childhood, and because most recent posts have revolved around poetic responses to this experience, it seemed fitting to reblog this poem once more with an appropriate background picture. The book I remember discovering as a child was a collection of black and white photographs of the ‘Great War.’

Since practising mindfulness meditation more assiduously I came to realise that the fourth line from the end of the poem below was simply not fit for purpose. It was just not saying what I really meant and was bathetic in effect.  This is the improved version. The old one is still available for comparison at this link. If I needed a justification to continue meditation, in the absence of any other, this would do the trick!
