Before it passes by and can’t be watched again, I thought I’d better flag up an excellent series on BBC iPlayer. David Olusoga looks back over the centuries during which Britain has been a host, though not always an hospitable one, to black people from Africa and elsewhere. It was surprising to learn that this relationship goes back two thousand years to the presence on Hadrian’s wall of soldiers from North Africa. Perhaps even more surprising was the way the British navy switched from protecting British slave ships to attacking the slave ships of others as part of a moral crusade to free the human cargo.
